New crochet pattern: Choir of Angels Christmas Ornaments

Every December after the fresh-cut tree is up I set aside an evening to gather around and unpack our family ornaments. We take turns hanging them one at a time, sharing again the familiar story behind each one. A trio of brilliantly painted wooden angels always delights. Like a little chorus of seraphim in heaven, they sing out their song, “holy, holy, holy!” I wanted to share my family’s tradition with you by designing a simple crochet angel ornament pattern with just enough charming detail to earn a place on your family’s tree for years to come. Two new yarn art installations

This past weekend, Jill of The Dapper Toad and I each installed a playful yarn installation at Downtown San Mateo’s annual Wine Walk. The energetic, inventive Downtown San Mateo Association colluded with the property owner of an empty storefront to convert it into a pop-up art gallery for the afternoon.

I tried an Aimee Diamond yarn installations I’ve admired for a while.  I designed a reusable installation so it can pop-up again. But even better, I designed it to twist and move so I can discover what fascinating abstract geometric shapes emerge from string art. (more…)

New blog series: Meet the Pattern

I’m excited to announce my new blog post series, “Meet the Pattern.” This series reveals the stories behind knitting and crochet patterns. “Meet the Pattern” fills the gap in the blogosphere between bland knitting and crochet “pattern round-ups” and “finished object on my oak dinner table” buzz-kills. Each story will differ a little, but the goal is to:

  1. introduce you to a new pattern
  2. show you what’s involved in making it
  3. hear some of the designer’s thoughts
  4. follow my finished object on its first adventures.

Now, with much fanfare, let’s Meet the Pattern! (more…)

4th of July Weekend Yarnbombing Spree

Hope you American guys had a great holiday weekend full of “oooh’s and aaah’s” at sparkly fireworks. We took the opportunity to get some yarnbombs up around the sleepy lagoon town, Foster City. You may remember that we threatened to publish the patterns for these. Jill demanded more photos for the pattern layouts, so more installs were in order. Cycling the shores on our PUBLIC bike and Schwinn, we found an amazing spot for a future yarnbomb. Sign up to get notified when the patterns come out here. (more…)

New Crochet Pattern: Happy Earrings

The inspiration for these exotic crochet earrings came from a chocolate tasting room in Palo Alto, California called The Chocolate Garage. Specializing in the world’s best-tasting bean-to-bar craft chocolate, the staff needed some appropriately exquisite, hand-crafted accessories that evoke the exuberance of cacao. I designed this pattern while savoring a bar of The Garage’s so-called Happy Chocolate, so it was only fitting to christen them Happy Earrings. (more…)

Plastic Canvas Craft Tutorial

Why are plastic canvas crafts so… well, lame? When Diane at Crafty Pod asked for plastic canvas tutorials for this week’s blog hop, I signed up to challenge myself.

Here’s a medium ripe for experimentation in three dimensions, and for merging with other crafts. There must be some fun uses for it. Turns out, there are! (more…)
