Our public art is meant to be interacted with, but that also means it is transient and ephemeral. It gets ripped and goes missing more often than we’d like, but usually remains undamaged longer than we hope for. These parrots are an example of a problem area: a grove of trees outside the SF Library we’ve transformed into the parrots of telegraph hill 5 times now. Each time they’ve lasted only days to weeks, even though they are a block away from all the other animals in #knittingthecommons. We suspect a mental health issue, which is a common blight on SF streets, and one we are participating in transforming by bringing joy to the streets with our craft. It’s not an answer to this problem, and we always vote to support other solutions. It’s easy to criticize yarn bombing as sweaters for trees when people need them, but this long post is to make the points that: shit happens and we’re ok with that, and our public art is for everyone, including those who misunderstand and destroy it. We get back on the horse and continue to make art for all. These parrots are already gone, but we will keep contributing to the revitalization and redesign of this new commons for the tenderloin community. ——
